iGaming traffic sources describe how users reach a gambling product, while an affiliate describes who sends them under a commercial relationship. SEO can be operated by a brand or an affiliate; PPC can be bought by either. Measure the media source and partner relationship separately.

This guide is for casino and sportsbook operators, affiliates, agencies, analysts and investors comparing acquisition models. It explains channel classification, measurement and control boundaries. It is not a media-buying instruction, legal advice or a forecast of cost, conversion rate or return.

What counts as an iGaming traffic source?

A traffic source is the route by which a person reaches a website or app. Search engines, paid ads, affiliate sites, referrals, email and direct visits are examples. Analytics tools then apply rules to group those visits into reporting channels.

Google Analytics, for example, defines channels as rule-based definitions of traffic sources. Its current default group describes Organic Search as non-ad search links, Paid Search as ads on search-engine sites and Affiliates as links on affiliate sites. Those reporting definitions are useful, but they do not describe the whole commercial arrangement behind a click.

How iGaming acquisition mechanisms, partner relationships and evidence records differ
RoleWhat it meansWhere to verify
SEOWork intended to earn discovery through non-ad search resultsSearch Console query and page data, landing pages, crawl and index records
PPCPaid acquisition where the advertiser pays under a platform or media-buying modelAd account, campaign, spend, click ID, placement and conversion records
AffiliateA partner relationship under which another business or publisher refers customersContract, partner ID, placement, sub-affiliate record, click and postback data

This is why “SEO versus PPC versus affiliates” is not a clean three-way channel comparison. SEO and PPC describe how visibility is obtained. Affiliate describes who is introducing the audience and how that party may be compensated.

Why SEO, PPC and affiliate are not three equal channels

The same operator can run SEO and paid search in-house, through an iGaming marketing agency or through a separate media team. An affiliate publisher can rank a comparison page organically, buy paid search where the law and platform permit it, use email, operate a community or combine several sources.

A practical acquisition model therefore needs two axes:

  1. Media source: where the visit was generated, such as organic search, paid search, referral, email or paid social.
  2. Commercial relationship: who controlled the placement and under what arrangement, such as owned media, agency-managed media or an affiliate contract.
How iGaming acquisition mechanisms, partner relationships and evidence records differ
RoleWhat it meansWhere to verify
Operator page ranks in searchOrganic searchLanding page, query group and market
Operator buys a search adPaid searchCampaign, spend, click ID and certification scope
Affiliate page ranks in searchOrganic search plus affiliate partnerPartner, placement, sub-affiliate and referral identifier
Affiliate buys permitted search adsPaid search plus affiliate partnerPartner, campaign owner, approval, cost and click-to-postback chain

Collapsing both axes into “affiliate traffic” hides whether a result came from search rankings, an ad auction, a referral placement or another source. Collapsing everything into “paid search” can hide which contracted partner controlled the creative and landing route. Both errors weaken compliance review and make channel economics difficult to reproduce.

iGaming SEO: organic discovery, not free traffic

iGaming SEO covers the technical, editorial and authority work used to make operator or publisher pages discoverable in non-ad search results. Typical surfaces include market guides, licence checks, payment explainers, game and sportsbook education, brand pages and comparison pages. The iGaming explainer provides the broader product context behind those page types.

Organic traffic does not carry a platform charge for each click, but it is not free. Costs can include research, writers, editors, engineering, digital PR, link due diligence, localisation, legal review and measurement. Results also depend on the site, query, market, competitors and search systems. BETTIMES does not use a universal SEO timeline or conversion-rate benchmark because those inputs are not portable from one domain to another.

Use Google Search Console for evidence about visibility in Google Search. Its Performance report defines clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position, with query, page, country, device, search appearance and date as dimensions. Search Console also warns that chart and table totals can differ because aggregation changes between property and page views.

Use web analytics and the Player Account Management system for the downstream journey. Search Console can show a search click; it does not establish a verified account, first deposit, net gaming revenue or retained customer. A defensible SEO report connects those systems while keeping their different definitions visible.

Evidence to retain for SEO

  • the exact landing URL, market, language and publication or change date;
  • query and page groups rather than a single cherry-picked ranking;
  • clicks, impressions and CTR with the reporting period and search type;
  • registrations, verified accounts and deposits under defined attribution windows;
  • material technical, content and link changes that could explain movement;
  • manual adjustments, consent loss and known tracking gaps.

iGaming PPC: paid visibility with an eligibility gate

PPC commonly refers to paid search, although teams sometimes use the term loosely for other auction-based media. In measurement, keep paid search separate from paid social, display, video and cross-network campaigns. Google Analytics classifies these channels with source, campaign and medium rules; a campaign name alone is not a reliable accounting system.

Paid search can place a permitted advertiser in front of active demand without waiting for organic ranking. That makes it useful for controlled tests, launches and landing-page comparisons. It does not guarantee profitable acquisition. Auction costs, creative eligibility, licence coverage, product mix, verification, deposits, withdrawals, bonuses and retention all affect the final economics.

Gambling advertising also has a gate before the bid. Google's current gambling and games policy permits online gambling and qualifying gambling-promoting content only in listed countries and under country-specific certification criteria. It also requires approved-country targeting, responsible-gambling information on the landing page and no targeting of minors. The promoted product must meet the listed local authorisation requirement.

Certification on one platform is not a gambling licence, and a licence is not automatic approval for every platform, country, product or creative. The gambling licence guide explains the legal permission layer; the ad account and current platform policy establish a separate distribution layer.

Evidence to retain for PPC

  • advertiser, account owner, agency access and the legal entity being promoted;
  • country, product, licence and platform-certification scope;
  • campaign, ad group, keyword or audience, creative and landing-page version;
  • spend, impression, click and click-ID records in a consistent currency and timezone;
  • conversion definition, attribution window and any imported offline event;
  • rejected ads, policy changes, excluded territories and material account restrictions.

Affiliate traffic: a relationship that can contain several sources

An iGaming affiliate refers prospective customers under a contract. Payment can use cost per acquisition, revenue share, a hybrid model, a fixed placement or another agreed structure. The commercial model should not be confused with the user's path to the affiliate or operator.

One affiliate may operate an SEO-led comparison site. Another may use a permitted paid campaign. A third may rely on email, community or media placements. If the operator records only a partner ID, it can calculate contractual commission but may not know the underlying media source. If it records only the last web referral, it may lose the commercial ownership of the introduction.

The affiliate record should therefore carry both attribution and control data. Useful fields include the partner and sub-affiliate IDs, click ID, placement URL, creative, target market, source or medium, timestamp, consent state, postback result and the definition of the payable event. The operator explainer shows why the licensed operator remains distinct from its publishers and suppliers.

CPA, revenue share and hybrid deals

CPA pays against a defined acquisition event; revenue share pays a percentage of an agreed revenue base; a hybrid combines elements of both. None of these terms has a universal calculation. A contract must define whether the event is registration, verified player, first-time depositor or another state, along with minimum deposit, qualification window, deductions, negative carryover, fraud treatment and reporting currency.

Do not compare a headline CPA with a revenue-share percentage as if both were complete unit economics. Reconcile them to the same cohort, market, product and time window, and distinguish GGR, GGY and NGR before applying any commission percentage.

Regulation follows the operator, partner and placement

Outsourcing acquisition does not outsource the regulatory question. Responsibility depends on the jurisdiction, licence, product, advertiser, contract and placement.

In Great Britain, LCCP condition 1.1.2 requires licensees' contracts with third parties to make those parties act as if bound by the same relevant licence conditions and codes, provide information needed for compliance and allow prompt termination for breach. The condition expressly refers to affiliates breaching a relevant advertising code.

The UK Gambling Commission's third-party guidance says inadequate control can lead to regulatory action. The ASA and CAP also state that Section 16 applies to third-party affiliate marketing acting on an advertiser's behalf. Gambling ads must be socially responsible and, for the covered products, not directed at under-18s through media selection or context.

Disclosure is another jurisdiction-specific layer. In the United States, the FTC's Endorsement Guides Q&A says a material affiliate relationship should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously and that “affiliate link” by itself may not adequately explain the relationship. That rule concerns transparency to the audience; it does not replace gambling licensing or advertising restrictions.

For a cross-border campaign, create a market matrix covering the operator entity, product, licence, permitted audience, platform eligibility, mandatory warnings, exclusions, disclosure and approval owner. The Brazil betting-ad rules guide is one example of why a global creative cannot be assumed to meet a market's local warnings and presentation rules.

How to measure traffic without double-counting

Attribution systems answer questions under chosen rules. They do not observe every influence on a player's decision. Search Console, analytics, an affiliate platform, an ad platform and the operator's PAM can each report a valid but different number because their scopes, identity rules, timezones, consent signals and attribution windows differ.

Use the following reconciliation sequence:

  1. Define the acquisition states: visit, registration, verified account, first deposit, qualified acquisition and retained active player.
  2. Capture source, medium, campaign, partner ID and click ID as separate fields where possible.
  3. Document which system owns each event and which timestamp and timezone it uses.
  4. Deduplicate retries and postbacks with stable event identifiers rather than row totals.
  5. Reconcile ad clicks, affiliate clicks, analytics sessions and PAM conversions by cohort and date.
  6. Record consent loss, rejected identifiers, cross-device gaps, organic direct-return journeys and manual adjustments.
  7. Compare cost or commission against the same qualified cohort and revenue definition.
  8. Treat the chosen attribution model as a reporting rule and test how the result changes under another reasonable window.

The transaction-monitoring guide explains the related control principle: an event or indicator should lead to traceable review, not be treated as proof by itself.

Which model fits which objective?

There is no universally best iGaming traffic source. The useful choice depends on the market, eligibility, product, data quality, time horizon and operating capability.

How iGaming acquisition mechanisms, partner relationships and evidence records differ
RoleWhat it meansWhere to verify
Build durable discovery for a topic or marketSEO on owned or publisher pagesSlow and uncertain ranking path; editorial and technical investment
Test permitted demand and landing pages quicklyCertified paid searchAuction cost, policy eligibility and dependence on paid distribution
Extend reach through specialist publishersAffiliate partnershipsPlacement transparency, commission definitions and third-party oversight
Reduce reliance on one acquisition routeMeasured mix of owned, paid and partner activityIdentity, attribution and duplicated credit across systems

Start with a falsifiable test rather than an annual promise. Define the market, page, spend or editorial scope, qualified event, observation window, compliance gate and stop condition. A test that cannot identify its source, partner and payable event cannot show which part of the model worked.

Questions for a traffic provider, affiliate network or agency

  1. Which legal entity controls the media account, domain, placement and tracking data?
  2. Which countries, products and licence types has the team actually handled?
  3. Is the proposed inventory owned, bought, brokered or supplied by sub-affiliates?
  4. Can every click and conversion be traced to a source, campaign, partner and landing page?
  5. Who checks platform certification, local advertising rules and creative approvals before launch?
  6. How are duplicate conversions, chargebacks, self-excluded customers, fraud and bonus abuse treated?
  7. Which definition of CPA, GGR or NGR appears in the commercial model?
  8. Who owns the accounts, content, creative, first-party data and history when the engagement ends?
  9. What can be independently verified, and which performance claims are self-reported case studies?

The BETTIMES agency guide compares established service providers by specialism and public evidence. It is a shortlist, not a substitute for this channel, compliance and data review.

Common classification mistakes

  • Calling every affiliate visit “referral” and losing the partner's underlying paid or organic source.
  • Calling every non-paid session “SEO,” including direct, email, AI-assistant and untagged campaign traffic.
  • Comparing platform-reported clicks with analytics sessions without accounting for consent, redirects and repeat clicks.
  • Using registration, first deposit and qualified CPA as interchangeable conversion events.
  • Crediting a last click with the whole customer decision while hiding earlier search, publisher or brand exposure.
  • Treating platform certification as proof of gambling legality, or a gambling licence as automatic ad approval.
  • Publishing a case-study conversion rate as a market benchmark without its cohort, spend, product and attribution window.

BETTIMES reviewed the cited analytics, search, advertising, regulatory and disclosure sources on 22 September 2026. This guide should be reviewed when a named platform changes its channel or gambling-ad rules, when a regulator changes third-party responsibility, or when new site measurement changes the recommended acquisition fields.

Frequently asked questions

What are iGaming traffic sources?

iGaming traffic sources are the routes through which users reach a casino, sportsbook, affiliate site or gambling app. They include organic search, paid search, referrals, affiliates, email, social media and direct visits. The label should identify the actual route rather than only the company being paid for the introduction.

Is affiliate traffic the same as SEO traffic?

No. Affiliate describes a commercial relationship; SEO describes organic search acquisition. An affiliate can receive users from SEO and then refer them to an operator, so the visit can be both organic-search-led and affiliate-owned. Store the media source and the affiliate or sub-affiliate identifier separately.

Is PPC allowed for online gambling?

Sometimes, subject to the jurisdiction, product, licence, platform and account certification. Google Ads, for example, permits specified gambling advertising only in listed countries under country-specific criteria and also imposes responsible-gambling, landing-page and age-targeting conditions. Approval for one market does not create global permission.

Which iGaming traffic source is best?

There is no universal winner. SEO can build durable discovery, PPC can test eligible demand quickly, and affiliates can extend reach through specialist publishers. The best test depends on legal eligibility, market, product, evidence quality, time horizon and whether the operator can connect traffic to verified customers and revenue.

What metrics should an iGaming operator track?

Track source, medium, campaign, partner and click identifiers alongside spend or commission. Define registrations, verified accounts, first deposits, qualified acquisitions, GGR or NGR and retention windows. Reconcile Search Console, analytics, advertising, affiliate and PAM records, and document attribution rules, consent gaps, rejected events and manual adjustments.
