A player prop can be void because the selected footballer did not meet its participation requirement. That requirement might be a place in the starting eleven or any appearance in the covered match. A substitute coming on late can therefore leave one selection void while making another eligible for normal settlement. Eligibility does not mean the bet wins.

This guide compares two specific markets: Betfair Sportsbook Player Passes and Sky Bet To Assist a Goal in 90 mins. Their English-language rules were reviewed on 23 October 2026. The comparison explains participation tests, not which bet to choose. All players, appearances, prices and returns below are invented; no customer account or payout was tested. Availability and terms vary by market, country and channel.

Two markets, two participation tests

The Betfair Sportsbook football rules make non-starters void in Player Passes. A late substitute does not meet that starting-eleven condition merely by eventually taking the field. The clause also identifies Opta as the source for pass settlement.

Sky Bet's football match rules, under To Assist a Goal in 90 mins, void a player who takes no part and retain the bet if the player takes any part. The assist itself is determined by Opta; the stated period is normal time with injury time, excluding extra time unless specified.

These products ask about different statistics. Comparing their participation conditions is useful; treating them as interchangeable offers or assuming that one is better value would not follow from these rules.

Fictional completed normal-time matches: participation eligibility only, not a prediction or a claim that the two markets measure the same statistic

The times are teaching inputs, not minimum-minute rules. The last two words in a settlement entry still matter: a condition being met is not a winning result. After eligibility is established, the selected statistic and line must be checked separately.

Unused reserve, late substitute and early withdrawal

Being named in a squad, sitting on the bench and participating on the pitch are three distinct records. A team sheet can establish selection without proving an appearance. Retain the official starting lineup and substitution record rather than inferring either from a photograph or a player listed in an app.

Consider a fictional player who waits on the bench until 88:00, then enters and records no qualifying assist before normal time ends. Under the Sky Bet market above, the short appearance meets the participation condition, but the required assist has not happened. An expectation of a longer appearance does not substitute for the accepted terms.

Leaving early is a separate issue. Betfair's general Sportsbook rules say a competitor who participates after the event starts and then fails to finish remains live, subject to specific sports rules. An injury or early substitution should therefore not be treated as an automatic refund trigger across every player market.

Keep the reason for leaving separate from whether the named selection qualified. If an accepted ticket contains an additional protection or replacement condition, read that condition too. This guide does not establish such an offer's availability or calculate a promotional refund.

What void, loss and win mean for one cash single

Suppose a fictional ordinary cash single has an £8 stake and accepted decimal odds of 2.75. Assume the applicable non-participation rule returns the stake when void, as Sky Bet states for its cited single. These alternative outcomes separate money returned from money won:

Separate fictional £8 cash singles at decimal 2.75, before fees or other adjustments; each row is an alternative, not a combined ticket
Alternative final statusCalculationGross returnNet result against £8
Fully void singleOriginal stake returned£8.00£0.00
Eligible selection losesNo winning return£0.00-£8.00
Eligible selection wins£8 × 2.75£22.00£14.00

The £22 includes the stake; it is not £22 profit plus another £8 refund. The losing row illustrates the late-appearance scenario when the required event never occurs in the covered period. None of these amounts is a quoted offer, an expected return or a test of withdrawal timing.

A short appearance can change which row applies without changing the amount originally staked. First establish eligibility, then the result, then the account credit. Reversing that order can turn an assumed refund into an unexplained loss.

A void player selection does not settle every ticket

Betfair's general rules distinguish Fixed Odds Multiples from Same Game Multiples. In the former, a void leg reduces the combination; the other legs still matter. Our void-leg accumulator guide owns that separate calculation. The cash-single table here should not be copied onto a whole multiple.

Nor does a greyed-out price establish a refund on an accepted bet. Our in-play acceptance guide separates a suspended market from the state of a ticket. A substitution record, trading pause and settlement entry answer different questions.

The examples assume the covered match is completed. An abandoned fixture requires its own clause. Sky Bet's cited assist section expressly addresses an assist already recorded before abandonment; that exception is another reason to check the named market rather than assuming all affected selections are void.

Reconstruct the participation decision

For a disputed player prop, retain:

  • The provider, product, complete market name and accepted selection, including the covered period.
  • The applicable participation clause and any specific ticket conditions.
  • The confirmed starting lineup, actual appearance or substitution record, and the specified statistics source.
  • The final grading, credited amount and explanation of a void or later correction.

Ask which participation test was applied before arguing about a player's minutes. If the test was met, ask which qualifying statistic determined the result. Our sportsbook settlement guide explains how those records connect to the account entry.

Frequently asked questions

Does being on the bench make a player prop valid?

Not by itself. The two named markets distinguish starting or actually participating from being listed as a reserve. Use the lineup and appearance record with the specific clause. A player can be available for selection without ever satisfying the participation test of an accepted wager.

Is there a universal minimum number of minutes?

No universal threshold is established by this comparison. Betfair's cited passes condition is starting status; Sky Bet's cited assist condition is any participation. The fictional 60:00, 88:00 and 12:00 examples illustrate those tests. They do not create a rule that applies to another prop or product.

Does an injury mean the full stake comes back?

Do not infer that from the injury alone. Establish whether the player satisfied the applicable participation condition, then check the specific market and accepted ticket. A fully void single, a losing eligible selection and a void component of a multiple have different accounting consequences.

Check participation before the performance target

The decisive record is the accepted condition matched to the actual appearance, not the number of minutes a bettor expected. These checks explain settlement; they do not make player betting predictable or protect the stake from loss. Gambling is for adults where legal and can cause financial harm.
