Corner betting can turn on the gap between the referee pointing to the flag and a player taking the kick. A total, a last-corner selection and a timed proposition need not use the same event definition. The accepted market and its specific clause matter more than a live counter or the word “corner” on its own.

This guide reviews English-language Betfair Sportsbook, Sky Bet and Smarkets documentation on 23 October 2026. It explains settlement, not corner predictions or a strategy for making money. Examples are fictional; no account, wager or payout was tested. Product availability and rules can differ by country and channel.

Which corners count toward a total?

Sky Bet's football general rules say its Total Corners market counts kicks actually taken and treats a retake as one corner. The team-total version concerns the named side, not both teams combined. The page identifies its feed provider as the settlement source for corner statistics.

“Awarded” describes the decision to give a corner. “Taken” describes the subsequent kick. A ball placed by the flag is not evidence that the second event occurred. Nor does an attempted kick followed by a referee-ordered retake necessarily create another counted corner.

Assume nine corners have already counted in a fictional completed match. These alternatives show why the final event record matters:

Separate late-match alternativeAdded to the nineFinal total
Another corner is awarded, but the match ends before it is taken09
One corner is taken once110
One corner is taken and that same corner is ordered to be retaken1, not 210

On a simple over-9.5 condition, nine is below the line and ten is above it. Two physical kicks in the third row do not produce eleven counted corners. These are counting examples, with no odds, cash-out, promotional or abandonment adjustment included.

Retakes, halves and the covered match

A retake repeats the same corner in this example. It should not be confused with a separate corner later in play. If a record shows two entries close together, establish whether they describe a retake or two distinct events before adding them.

Sky Bet's separate Corner Bands clause also counts a retake once. Its default match duration is normal time with referee-added stoppage time, unless the market or agreed fixture format says otherwise. An explicitly extra-time-inclusive market has a different scope. Our half-time/full-time guide explains why an interval result, second-half subtotal and whole-match result are different records.

For a first-half corner ticket, retain the first-half event log and its actual end, rather than substituting the match total. Keep stoppage time separate from an extra-time period. An app's full-match corner number cannot, by itself, answer a question about one half.

Timed corners: one rulebook can contain different clocks

Betfair's Sportsbook football rules generally count corners taken, including where timing matters. Its “Corner Awarded X - Y” paragraph nevertheless ends by referring to kicks taken inside the window. Later, a separately named “Match outcomes in 5/10 minutes” section instead timestamps a corner when the referee signals the award.

Those clauses are not interchangeable. If a ticket's label does not establish which applies, request clarification rather than resolving the wording conflict yourself.

The four-second gap is fictional. Match the actual ticket's window and boundary wording before using this comparison. A broadcast minute or a rounded app display does not establish the settlement timestamp.

Betfair's general introduction separates Sportsbook from Exchange and gives specific sports rules precedence over general rules. This guide does not transfer a Sportsbook clause to an Exchange order. Our matched and unmatched exchange guide addresses that different product.

Last corner means the last qualifying event

Smarkets football rule 12.5.48 settles Last Match Corner on the team taking it; an award without a kick does not count. Its adjacent First Match Corner clause uses the same taken-event distinction. These are named Smarkets provisions, not a promise about every operator's similarly titled market.

Suppose the away side takes a corner, then the home side is awarded one that is never taken before the final whistle. Under that Last Match Corner definition, the later signal does not displace the away side's kick. This assumes a completed covered match and no other qualifying corner.

“Last so far” during an interrupted fixture is a different claim from “last in the completed match.” Another corner could follow if play resumes. Establish the event's completion status before using a last-corner label to justify settlement.

What an abandoned match changes

Betfair Sportsbook's football abandonment clause preserves decided outcomes and voids others, subject to its restart and temporary-interruption provisions. A pause alone therefore does not establish a void.

For a fictional count of eight, an over-7.5 condition has already been reached, whereas over 9.5 still could be reached if play continues. Under 9.5 is not conclusively won merely because the present count is eight. These are logical distinctions, not instructions to settle a live ticket before its operator applies the governing clause.

Smarkets rule 12.4 likewise distinguishes unconditionally determined markets from unresolved ones within its own completion and information deadlines. Do not borrow another operator's waiting period. A completed first-half market and an unresolved full-match total can require different treatment after the same interruption.

Check the event record before the account entry

For a disputed corner count, collect a small, specific evidence pack:

  • The accepted product, full market name, selection, line and covered period.
  • The governing corner clause, including any timed-market exception or retake treatment.
  • The specified result source and an event log distinguishing awards, kicks and retakes.
  • The final or interrupted event status, plus relevant resumption information.
  • The original settlement entry and the operator's explanation of any correction.

Ask which event was included or excluded and under which clause. A disagreement over one late corner is more precise than a complaint based only on two apps showing different totals. Our sportsbook settlement guide covers the wider trail from accepted ticket to account transaction.

Frequently asked questions

Does a corner awarded before the whistle always count?

No. Under the taken-only total described above, an untaken award adds nothing. A specifically award-timed proposition asks a different question. Identify the product and applicable clause before interpreting a signal near a period's end.

Is a retaken corner counted twice?

Not in Sky Bet's cited Total Corners and Corner Bands provisions. One corner with a retake counts once there. Two distinct corners are a different event sequence; the number of kicks visible in a clip is not enough to classify them.

Does the live corner counter prove how my bet will settle?

No. It does not establish the accepted market, relevant time window, retake classification or final event status. Compare the specified source with those conditions and retain the operator's settlement explanation. A display and an account entry serve different purposes.

Read the clause attached to the corner

Check the event definition first, the covered period second, and interruption treatment where relevant. Counting the right kind of corner is an evidence task, not a betting edge. Gambling can result in losing the full stake and is restricted to adults where lawful. See our responsible-gambling information.
