An unmatched bet is still an offer awaiting acceptance. A partially matched bet has two parts: an accepted wager and a remainder that can still be accepted. On Betfair Exchange, cancelling the remainder does not cancel the part already matched. Read both amounts before deciding how much is at risk.

This guide uses Betfair's English-language Exchange help and General Terms, reviewed on 17 October 2026. It concerns ordinary cash exchange offers, not Sportsbook tickets or Exchange Games. The amounts below are fictional, with fees and special settlement adjustments excluded. No account, cancellation or real-money transaction was tested.

Read matched and unmatched amounts separately

Betfair's matching explanation distinguishes unmatched, partially matched and fully matched offers. A matched wager cannot be changed or cancelled through the ordinary offer-cancellation process. Its unmatched remainder remains an offer until it is accepted, cancelled or otherwise handled under the applicable rules.

The displayed status can be out of date. A request shown as unmatched can find an opposing customer moments later. Repeating an apparently unsuccessful request can therefore create several wagers rather than replace the first. Our exchange-versus-sportsbook guide explains the broader difference between an offered order and a bookmaker's accepted ticket.

A fictional £100 request with £40 matched

Assume a single ordinary cash offer requests a £100 stake at decimal odds of 4.00. Only £40 is matched, and £60 remains offered. Compare two separate alternatives: backing the selection, or laying that same selection using the backer's stake as the lay stake. These are not two positions held together.

Separate fictional £100 cash requests at 4.00, each £40 matched; fees, other positions and special settlement excluded
Separate fictional requestRequested stakeMatched stakeStill offeredMatched loss if the bet loses
Back at 4.00£100£40£60£40
Lay at 4.00£100£40£60£120

For the back alternative, £40 is the stake already exposed to the result. If that matched bet wins normally at 4.00, its gross return is £160, including £40 of stake, and its profit before fees is £120. If it loses, the loss is £40. The unmatched £60 is not yet another accepted wager.

The lay alternative has a different loss calculation. Betfair's lay-betting help distinguishes the opposing backer's stake from the layer's liability. Here, liability on the matched portion is £40 × (4.00 - 1) = £120 if the selection wins. If the selection loses normally, the layer wins £40 before fees.

The outstanding lay offer also matters. If its remaining £60 later matches at the same 4.00, it adds £60 × 3 = £180 of liability. Total matched liability would then be £300. That additional exposure is conditional on further matching, not already a settled loss. Different matched prices require separate calculations.

A cancellation request is not confirmation

Betfair's General Terms, clause 18.12, say cancellation becomes effective when Betfair sends confirmation. An offer may be accepted in whole or part while a cancellation request is being processed. A click or loading indicator therefore cannot establish the final unmatched amount.

Suppose another £10 of the fictional offer matches before cancellation takes effect. The matched stake becomes £50 and the remainder £50. Cancelling that remaining £50 leaves the £50 matched wager in place. In the lay alternative at 4.00, the matched liability is now £150, not the earlier £120.

Read the final order record after confirmation. Clause 18.13 also describes amending an unmatched offer as cancellation followed by a new offer at the amended terms. An earlier screenshot cannot establish which parts were accepted before that change.

Check what happens when the event starts

Betfair's Keep bet and Take SP help describes persistence options for offers still unmatched at the start. A confirmed Keep instruction can leave the offer available after the market turns in-play. Where supported, Take SP can convert it to a Starting Price bet, whose resulting price need not be the original requested price.

The same page says Take SP is available on Desktop but not in the new Exchange app experience; its options there are Cancel and Keep. Check the actual market and channel rather than assuming every screen offers all three. Sport-specific withdrawals and other rules can change treatment.

The matching help's short description of an unmatched offer lapsing at the start must be read alongside those persistence options. An event starting does not prove that every outstanding offer disappeared. This guide does not calculate Starting Price reconciliation or recommend a persistence setting.

Reserved money is not the same as a loss

A balance amount held against an offer is not itself evidence of a matched wager or realised loss. Betfair's lay help explains that liability is taken from the available balance to cover the losing outcome. Check the matched record and any outstanding offers separately from the balance display.

The examples above isolate one offer and exclude other positions. They do not calculate a whole market's combined exposure or anyone's withdrawable balance. Our exchange commission guide deals with settled net market winnings, which is a later calculation.

Cancelling an unmatched offer is also different from sportsbook cash out. One removes an outstanding offer if confirmed; the other concerns early settlement of an accepted bookmaker wager. Do not use a cash-out amount as proof that an Exchange cancellation succeeded.

Keep a record of the final position

  • Identify the Exchange product, market, selection and order identifier.
  • Separate requested stake, matched stake, unmatched remainder and each matched price.
  • For a lay, calculate liability rather than reading the backer's stake as maximum loss.
  • Retain the cancellation confirmation and subsequent order status, including any additional matches.

If those records disagree, ask the operator which amount matched and when cancellation became effective. These checks help reconstruct a transaction; they do not make gambling safe, guarantee a refund or show that an exchange is profitable.

Frequently asked questions

Does unmatched mean the money is already lost?

No. An unmatched offer has not yet become a wager to that extent, but it may still be accepted later. Money held against it and a realised betting loss are different things. Check whether the offer remains outstanding, and do not assume it disappeared merely because its first screen showed no match.

Can I cancel a partially matched bet?

For the ordinary Betfair Exchange offer described here, cancellation concerns the still-unmatched part. It does not undo the accepted portion. Further matching can occur before cancellation is confirmed, so the final matched amount may differ from the amount visible when the request was sent. Special voiding rules are a separate question.

Is a £40 lay stake only £40 at risk?

Not at decimal odds of 4.00 in this fictional example. The matched backer's stake is £40, while the layer's liability is £120. An outstanding offer can add further liability if it matches. Use actual matched prices and applicable market rules; this calculation excludes fees, other positions and special settlement adjustments.
