Win to nil requires the chosen team to win without conceding. A clean sheet requires it to concede no goals, whether it wins or draws. In a completed 0-0 match, both teams have clean sheets but neither has won to nil. A 1-0 winner satisfies both conditions.

That distinction applies to affirmative selections on the same team over the same period. A bet on the opposite outcome, a different team or a separately named period needs its own reading. This guide explains settlement conditions, not which team to back.

The examples use fictional scores and ordinary team markets. BetTimes reviewed the linked operator rules on 22 October 2026; this is a document review, not a test of a customer account or real wager. Availability and contract terms depend on the operator, product and location.

A win adds a second requirement

Sky Bet's football rules define Win to Nil through two requirements: the selected side scores at least once and its opponent scores nothing during the covered 90 minutes. The same page describes Clean Sheet through the nominated team's goals conceded, without requiring a victory.

Write Team A's goals as A and its opponent's as B. The affirmative clean-sheet condition is B = 0. Win to nil needs B = 0 and A greater than 0. The extra requirement explains the difference at a goalless draw; no estimate of a team's defensive strength is needed to resolve it.

The table assumes the match has completed its specified normal period, including added time, and no void or special settlement applies. Each result is a separate hypothetical match. Both columns concern Team A, not whichever side happened to win.

Fictional completed 90-minute results, including stoppage time: separate affirmative selections on Team A

1-0WinWin
2-0WinWin
2-1LossLoss
0-1LossLoss

The 2-1 row shows why winning alone is insufficient: Team A conceded. At 0-1, Team B has the clean sheet and the win to nil, but Team A does not. Reading the other team's column would reverse whose performance the ticket actually requires.

Read the team, selection and complete label

Smarkets distinguishes Team Clean Sheet, Team to Win to Nil and Winner and Both Teams to Score in its football market definitions. Similar words on a coupon need not describe the same contract.

Where an operator offers an explicit Yes/No market, the selected answer matters. At a completed 0-0, an affirmative win-to-nil selection fails. That does not mean a separate selection explicitly backing No would also fail. Nor should the reader assume every operator offers a binary version of every named market.

A standalone team clean sheet also does not specify the number of goals scored by that team. The 1-0 and 2-0 examples both qualify, whereas an exact-score selection distinguishes them. Player or goalkeeper-specific markets can carry participation conditions absent from a team market; this table does not grade those products.

For a different goals question, our BTTS explanation covers whether each side scores. At 0-0, both teams keep clean sheets while neither scores. These statements are consistent because they ask about different sides of the scoreline.

Stoppage time can remove the clean sheet

Betfair's Sportsbook football rules normally count 90 minutes plus referee-added time, excluding the separate extra-time period and penalty shootout. The document also makes provision for fixtures scheduled to a different length. An explicit period label or fixture exception must therefore be checked before applying a normal 90-minute example.

Suppose Team A leads 1-0 when the clock reaches 90 minutes. Team B then equalises at 90+4, before normal time ends. The completed score for the illustrated market is 1-1. Team A has neither a clean sheet nor a win to nil. A graphic showing 1-0 at 90:00 was an intermediate score.

Now suppose normal time ends 0-0 and Team A scores the only goal during extra time. The ordinary normal-time comparison still uses 0-0: clean sheet Yes qualifies, while Team A to win to nil does not. The later 1-0 cannot be substituted into that earlier period.

A shootout winner likewise need not be a normal-time winner. If regulation ends 0-0, successful shootout kicks do not turn the illustrated normal-time win-to-nil selection into a win. A ticket expressly covering extra time or qualification is a different product. Our Asian total goals guide addresses another separate calculation, the combined goal count.

An interruption is not a final clean sheet

At 0-0 after 70 minutes, both teams have avoided conceding so far. Neither has completed the normal-time clean-sheet condition. If play stops, applying the first table row immediately would treat an unfinished match as a finished one.

Smarkets rule 12.4 separates unconditionally determined outcomes from unresolved markets and specifies completion and resumption conditions. Its rules include an early voiding provision when resumption information is unavailable. Check the full clause for the actual event rather than assuming every interruption produces an immediate refund or a completed 0-0.

Conversely, once a goal has been confirmed against Team A, that side has failed the affirmative clean-sheet condition in the illustrated period. That logical fact does not, by itself, establish when an operator must close or pay the ticket. The applicable abandonment rules still govern its treatment. A disputed or overturned goal also cannot be treated as a settled input without checking the result used.

Keep the evidence behind the grade

Betfair's general Sportsbook rules distinguish Sportsbook from Exchange and give specific sports rules priority over conflicting general provisions. Do not transfer the settlement explanation from one product to another merely because both use the same brand name.

For a disputed grade, retain the following records:

  • The accepted market title, team name and selected answer, including any Yes/No wording.
  • The period covered and the confirmed score for that period, separate from extra time or shootout results.
  • The bet acknowledgement and account settlement entry, including any void or adjustment explanation.
  • For interrupted play, the event status, restart information and the clause the operator applied.

These records let the operator explain which condition failed or why the bet was voided. They do not establish an entitlement to payment on their own. No comparative odds, probability estimates or claims that one market is safer follow from the score table.

Frequently asked questions

Does 0-0 count as win to nil?

No for an affirmative selection on either team in the completed-match example. Neither side won. A standalone clean-sheet Yes selection on either side satisfies its goals-conceded condition, provided that market stands. A separate No selection or exceptional void rule must be read on its own terms.

Can both teams keep a clean sheet?

Yes, at a completed 0-0 within the relevant period. Each team conceded zero. They cannot both win that same match period. This explains why clean sheet and win to nil are not interchangeable descriptions of the same selection.

Does a goal in extra time change a clean-sheet bet?

It does not change the normal-time examples here, which exclude the separate extra-time period. A goal during added stoppage time does count. Check the accepted period rather than relying on the eventual score displayed after a cup tie.
