A football match ending 1-1 has two goals. For a standard completed-match Asian total, Over 2 returns the stake, Over 2.25 returns half of it and Over 2.5 loses the whole stake. The score has not changed; the accepted line has.

Asian total goals measures the combined goals in the stated period. A quarter line divides the original stake equally between its neighbouring whole and half-goal lines. Settle the two portions separately, add the credited amounts, then subtract the original stake to find profit or loss.

This is a settlement guide, not a forecast or a reason to bet. Operator help and rules were reviewed on 21 October 2026. Every amount and price below is invented for calculation; no customer account, real ticket or payout was tested. Product availability and contract terms vary by country and operator.

Count goals, not the winning margin

A 2-0 result and a 1-1 result both supply a total of two. A team handicap asks a different question about the selected side's adjusted margin. Adding a handicap to one team or discarding the opponent's goals would calculate the wrong market. Our Asian handicap settlement guide treats that separate mechanism.

The Cloudbet totals explanation describes whole, half and quarter lines and gives both Over and Under examples. Its mechanics are useful for this calculation, not evidence that the operator serves every reader's location or that every market bearing a similar label has identical terms.

For an ordinary completed Asian whole-goal line, equality produces a push: the stake comes back without profit. A half-goal line cannot equal an integer total, so there is no arithmetic push. A separate cancellation or void rule can still return money; that is a different reason for the credit.

Over 2.25 contains two equal portions

Expand Over 2.25 into Over 2.0 and Over 2.5. With £40 originally staked, each portion is £20. The quarter in the label describes the goal line, not a 25% refund or an instruction to stake another £40 on each component.

When exactly two goals count, the Over 2.0 portion pushes and returns £20. Over 2.5 loses and returns zero. Combined return is £20, leaving a £20 loss against the original £40. With at least three goals, both portions win normally; with zero or one, both lose.

Under 2.25 uses Under 2.0 and Under 2.5. At exactly two goals, the first pushes while the second wins. Reversing Over to Under therefore reverses which neighbouring portion wins or loses; the two positions do not have the same result at the boundary.

Compare six separate £40 examples

The following alternatives each use a fictional £40 cash single at decimal odds of 1.90. The repeated price isolates the settlement arithmetic. It is not a claim that six real offers are available at the same odds, nor a comparison of their value. These are separate alternatives, not six bets bought together.

A full win returns £40 × 1.90 = £76, including the £40 stake. Its profit is £36. A full push returns £40 and earns nothing. A loss returns zero and costs £40. For a quarter line, apply the same calculation to each £20 portion before adding the returns.

Calculated gross returns on a fictional £40 cash single at decimal 1.90; each row is a separate alternative, not a combined ticket
Separate accepted marketGross return: 0 or 1 goalGross return: exactly 2 goalsGross return: 3 or more goals
Over 2.0£0£40£76
Over 2.25£0£20£76
Over 2.5£0£0£76
Under 2.0£76£40£0
Under 2.25£76£58£0
Under 2.5£76£76£0

The £58 in the Under 2.25 row is £20 refunded plus £20 × 1.90 = £38 from the winning portion. Deduct £40 to obtain £18 profit. That is half the £36 full-win profit. It is not half the £76 full-win gross return, which would incorrectly give £38 as the whole payment.

All rows exclude promotions, deductions, taxes, commission, cash-out and rounding adjustments. Keep an actual receipt's accepted price and charges rather than importing the example's 1.90 into an account dispute.

A 2.75 line straddles 2.5 and 3.0

Apply the same equal-split calculation to Over 2.75: £20 on Over 2.5 and £20 on Over 3.0. Exactly three goals win the first portion and push the second. At the invented 1.90 price, the total return is £38 + £20 = £58, with £18 profit.

For Under 2.75, use Under 2.5 and Under 3.0. Three goals lose the first portion and refund the second, so only £20 comes back and £20 is lost overall. This is the opposite partial result from Over 2.75 at the same total.

These tables calculate completed integer-goal outcomes. They do not assign probabilities, predict scores or demonstrate that a quarter line is safer or more profitable than a neighbouring line.

Establish the period before using either table

Betfair's football rules state that its ordinary soccer markets use 90 minutes plus officials' stoppage time unless otherwise specified, excluding extra time and shootouts. They also address fixtures scheduled for a different duration. Check the actual market period instead of assuming every football event is a standard 90-minute match.

A goal at 90+4 is stoppage-time action in that normal period. A goal in a separate extra-time period is different. For a fictional normal-time market finishing 1-1 before an extra-time goal makes it 2-1, the relevant total remains two. A market expressly covering extra time needs its own rules, not this normal-time input.

Live totals also need a product check. The bet365 English-US live-market rules say its live Goal Line considers goals scored both before and after the bet. On that same page, live Asian Spread uses only the remaining game or half. Do not copy the spread's score-reset instruction into the named Goal Line product. This is that help page's documented example, not a claim about every state, country or bookmaker.

An abandoned match raises a further question: which outcomes, if any, were already determined under the governing completion rule? Betfair's football page addresses that separately. Do not insert an interruption score into a completed-match table and infer that every portion must settle immediately. Our BTTS meaning guide explains another distinct goal-based market.

Frequently asked questions

Is Over 2.25 the same as Over 2.5?

No. At exactly two qualifying goals, the completed Over 2.25 example returns half the original stake because its Over 2.0 portion pushes. Over 2.5 loses outright. Both win normally from three goals, but their accepted prices can differ. Similar winning thresholds do not make the two tickets interchangeable.

Does a half win mean half the full gross return?

No. Add the winning half's stake-inclusive return to the other half's refund. In the fictional £40 bet at 1.90, that is £38 plus £20, or £58 returned. Profit is £18 after the full £40 cost, compared with £36 profit on a full win. Special adjustments are excluded.

Can I use the line alone to challenge a payout?

The line is only part of the record. Keep the direction, covered period, qualifying score, accepted price, original debit and credited components. Also retain any void or adjustment explanation. This reconstructs the arithmetic without deciding an individual contract dispute. Gambling can lose the full stake and is only for adults where lawful.
