Asian handicap settlement adjusts the selected team's score before deciding whether a bet wins, loses or returns its stake. A whole line can produce a refund. A half line cannot tie on an integer goal score. A quarter line divides the stake equally between a neighbouring whole line and half line, which can settle differently.
The amount credited to an account is the gross return, not necessarily profit. That distinction explains why a half-winning bet can return more than half the full-win payment. This guide is for adult readers checking a football bet's calculation, not choosing a betting strategy. The examples are hypothetical ordinary cash back bets, with commission, taxes, promotions and rounding adjustments excluded.
Read the accepted line and score basis first
Keep the selected team, signed handicap, covered period and accepted decimal price together. A negative line subtracts goals from the selected side; a positive line adds them. Apply the line to that side once. Adding its handicap while also subtracting the opposite side's handicap would double the adjustment.
The bet365 Asian Lines FAQ distinguishes whole, half and split lines. Those categories describe how the adjustment works. They do not establish which part of an event supplies the score, or what happens when the event is incomplete. The calculations below use a completed pre-match football market's applicable score. Three-way handicaps, totals and lay bets are outside the example.
Settle a whole or half line using the goal margin
Let M be the selected team's goals minus its opponent's goals in the covered period. Let H be that team's signed handicap. Calculate M + H. A positive result wins; zero returns the stake; a negative result loses. Betfair's Asian Handicap explanation describes both the adjusted settlement score and the whole-goal refund.
For example, a selected side that wins by one goal has M = +1. With H = -1.0, the adjusted margin is zero and the stake is returned. At -1.5, the adjusted margin is -0.5 and the same team result loses the bet. Neither calculation changes the actual match score.
A half-goal line such as +0.5 or -1.5 cannot produce zero when M is an integer. That removes the arithmetic tie; it does not prevent a separate void under event-completion or other applicable rules. A zero handicap is a whole line: a drawn qualifying score returns the stake.
Expand a quarter line before pricing the return
A quarter line is shorthand for two neighbouring lines, with half the original stake on each. Betfair explicitly describes a 50/50 stake split at the same odds. bet365 also describes its split line as a combination of a whole line and a half line. The displayed quarter number is not used as one all-or-nothing score adjustment.
For -0.25, use 0 and -0.5. For +0.25, use 0 and +0.5. For -0.75, use -0.5 and -1.0; for +0.75, use +0.5 and +1.0. These are the adjacent half-goal increments around the quarter line, not two additional wagers at the full original stake.
Settle each component using its own M + H value. A winning component contributes its stake multiplied by the decimal price. A tying component contributes its stake back. A losing component contributes zero. Add the two returns, then subtract the entire original stake to find the net profit or loss.
A 60-unit worked settlement matrix
Every row below assumes a hypothetical 60-unit cash stake at decimal 2.40. It is a calculation exercise, not an available price or suggested stake. A quarter line divides that 60 into two 30-unit components at the same price. The goal margin always describes the selected side, and all returns use the example's qualifying completed score.
| Accepted line or split | Selected side's goal margin | Component outcome | Gross return / net profit or loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| -1.0 (whole) | +1: wins by one | Push | 60 units / 0 units |
| -1.5 (half) | +1: wins by one | Loss | 0 units / -60 units |
| -0.25: 0 and -0.5 | 0: draw | Push + loss | 30 units / -30 units |
| +0.25: 0 and +0.5 | 0: draw | Push + win | 102 units / +42 units |
| -0.75: -0.5 and -1.0 | +1: wins by one | Win + push | 102 units / +42 units |
| +0.75: +0.5 and +1.0 | -1: loses by one | Loss + push | 30 units / -30 units |
| -0.75: -0.5 and -1.0 | +2: wins by two | Win + win | 144 units / +84 units |
| +0.75: +0.5 and +1.0 | -2: loses by two | Loss + loss | 0 units / -60 units |
The half-win rows return 30 × 2.40 = 72 units from the winning component, plus 30 refunded from the other component. Gross return is 102 units; deducting the original 60 leaves 42 units of profit. A full win at this price returns 144 and earns 84, so the half win earns half the full-win profit, not half its gross payment.
The half-loss rows return the pushing 30-unit component and lose the other 30. Gross return is 30 and the net result is -30. “Half loss” describes how the stake settled, not a 50% change in the decimal price. Our odds-format guide explains why decimal returns already include the winning stake.
In-play and period rules can change the input score
bet365's English-Great-Britain FAQ says goals scored before an in-play Asian Handicap bet is placed do not count for its settlement, effectively resetting the score to 0-0 at that point. This is its documented provider example. It must not be treated as a universal instruction to discard earlier goals on every operator's market.
The period also needs checking. Smarkets' football rules, sections 12.1 and 12.5.14, describe its standard football and Asian Handicap score basis as regular time plus stoppage time; the standard 90-minute markets exclude extra time and shootouts unless stated otherwise. The page separately specifies friendlies and half-time markets. These are Smarkets examples, not a rule for every fixture or account.
The sources were checked on 9 October 2026. Smarkets' page displays a last-modified date of 13 October 2022 and says general rules and Terms and Conditions can take precedence. We reviewed bet365's FAQ, not its complete sports-rules contract. Check the applicable account, market and rules version before using either provider example to challenge a settlement.
A returned component is different from an event void
A push in the matrix comes from the adjusted score tying. An abandoned or postponed fixture raises a separate completion-rule question. Smarkets addresses that separately in section 12.4, including an exception for markets whose outcomes are already unconditionally determined. The live score at interruption cannot simply be substituted into this completed-market matrix.
An account can also label a returned component as “void”. Read the reason as well as the label: was that component tied after adjustment, or did an exceptional market rule apply? Keep the stake debit, refunded component and winning return separate when reconstructing the account entry.
Frequently asked questions
Does a quarter handicap refund one quarter of the stake?
No. Quarter describes the goal line. The stake is split into equal halves on adjacent whole and half lines. In the hypothetical 60-unit example, each component is 30 units. A pushing component returns its 30; the other component can win or lose according to its own adjusted margin.
Can the score produce a full push on a quarter line?
Not in the completed integer-goal examples here. One component is a half-goal line, so it cannot tie. If the whole-line component pushes, the other wins or loses. A full refund caused by an abandoned fixture or another void rule is a separate event-rule outcome, not a quarter-line arithmetic push.
Does understanding the handicap show that the price is good?
No. Settlement arithmetic tells you how a stated score and line affect the return. It does not establish the chance of that score occurring or prove a profitable opportunity. Our bookmaker-margin guide explains why price-derived probability estimates require assumptions and are not verified forecasts.
Reconcile the account entry
To check an Asian handicap settlement, establish the ticket's score basis, apply the signed line or split, and calculate each component before combining the gross return. Then subtract the original stake and check any excluded charges or exceptional rules. A correct calculation explains an account entry; it does not make gambling safe or guarantee a return.
