New Zealand's online casino auction gave 11 entities rights to apply for 15 licences, the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) reports. Those rights are not licences.
The DIA provider update dated 13 October 2026 covers the 29 September to 12 October auction.
What the online casino auction decided
DIA reports 32 bidders, 10 rounds and a final price of NZD15 million per licence:
| Entity or group | Rights to apply |
|---|---|
| Baytree Interactive Limited | 3 |
| Playvia Gaming (NZ) Limited | 2 |
| Rock Swift Group Limited | 2 |
| Eight other successful entities, one each | 8 |
DIA's price does not establish cash already received.
Applicants still face detailed assessment. DIA has not published the eventual consumer brands.
What customers should expect next
On its separate information page for customers, DIA says it expects to start issuing licences from early 2027. That is the department's expectation, not an announcement of an individual grant or launch date.
The customer guidance describes a future public register of licensed casinos and a unique registration icon to help identify them. It also describes complaints to the casino or DIA if a licensed operator fails to meet the required standards. These are features of the licensing system described by the department, not evidence that the auction participants already hold those permissions.
A company name on the auction list therefore cannot, on its own, establish the licence status of a website bearing a similar name.
Keep the application and licence records separate
For a later status check, retain the exact legal entity and distinguish the auction result from an application, a licensing decision and the customer-facing brand. BetTimes' licence-verification guide explains why a name match alone leaves gaps.
Our earlier report on GLI's New Zealand testing announcement concerns a different part of market preparation. Neither laboratory approval nor an auction allocation substitutes for an operator's licence decision.
The official pages were checked on 16 October. This is a New Zealand online casino development, not a change to permissions in other markets or a recommendation to use an auction participant's service.
