Basketball betting overtime rules depend on the market, competition and product on the accepted ticket. A game can continue after regulation while a quarter or regulation-only bet has already reached its scoring boundary. Even a second-half market can include overtime in one competition category and exclude it in another.
This guide checks the British-facing Betfair Sportsbook and bet365 rule pages on 29 October 2026. It focuses on choosing the correct scoring period before calculating a result. The score ledger below is invented; no real fixture, accepted wager or account payment was tested.
Separate the playing clock from the betting period
The NBA's scoring and timing rule specifies twelve-minute regulation periods and five-minute overtime periods, with play continuing after a tie at the end of the fourth. That describes the game. It does not decide which points a sportsbook includes in a particular market.
Read the complete ticket label: full-game winner, regulation-time result, second-half total and fourth-quarter total are different instructions. Also retain the competition, operator, product and whether the bet was placed before play or in-play. A television graphic saying final does not preserve those distinctions.
The signed line is a separate question. Our moneyline versus spread guide explains winner and handicap calculations. Here the first task is deciding which score may enter them.
What the named rules include
Betfair's basketball help page and GBR Sportsbook rulebook, sections 7.2 and 7.5 distinguish US Basketball from Euro/Other Basketball. Ordinary full-game winner, handicap and total-points markets include overtime. The Euro/Other three-option Match Result uses regulation instead.
| Betfair Sportsbook market | US Basketball | Euro/Other Basketball |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary full-game winner, handicap or total points | Overtime included | Overtime included |
| Quarter market | Overtime excluded | Overtime excluded |
| Second-half market | Overtime included | Overtime excluded |
| Euro/Other three-option Match Result | Not established by this row | Regulation only |
These are named Sportsbook examples, not Exchange rules or a statement about every country. In particular, second half is insufficient as a stand-alone instruction: the competition category changes its boundary.
There is an operator difference too. The bet365 British basketball rules state that pre-game bets include overtime unless otherwise specified. They also explicitly include overtime under their in-play game, half and quarter headings. Do not transfer Betfair's quarter exclusion to a bet365 live-quarter ticket. Read the specific market terms, including any exception, before applying either summary.
Keep a score ledger that can answer each market
Consider a fictional completed five-on-five game with one overtime. A and B are invented teams. The table separates points scored during a period from the running match score; all figures are an editorial example.
| Stage | Points scored in that stage, A-B | Running score, A-B |
|---|---|---|
| First half | 44-48 | 44-48 |
| Third quarter | 25-22 | 69-70 |
| Fourth quarter | 21-20 | 90-90 |
| Overtime | 12-6 | 102-96 |
Regulation therefore contains 180 points. The completed game contains 198. Regulation's second half is 46-42, or 88 points; add overtime and that becomes 58-48, or 106. The fourth quarter alone contains 41 points. Its score remains 21-20 even after the game's running score reaches 102-96.
For a Euro/Other comparison, use this invented scoring pattern without assuming NBA period lengths. The arithmetic is a test of the scoring boundary, not evidence that a particular competition or market was offered.
Apply the boundary before the line
Each row below is a separate hypothetical selection. The results assume the named period treatment applies, the fixture finishes normally and no special terms override it. They are not a proposed combined bet.
| Illustrative selection | Score to use | Result in this example |
|---|---|---|
| A full-game winner, overtime included | 102-96 | A wins |
| A full-game -4.5, overtime included | 102 minus 4.5 = 97.5, against 96 | A covers |
| Full-game over 190.5, overtime included | 198 points | Over wins |
| Regulation-only over 190.5 | 180 points | Over loses |
| Euro/Other regulation three-way draw | 90-90 | Draw wins |
| Second-half over 95.5, Betfair US treatment | 106 points including overtime | Over wins |
| Second-half over 95.5, Betfair Euro/Other treatment | 88 points excluding overtime | Over loses |
| Fourth-quarter over 45.5, Betfair quarter treatment | 41 points | Over loses |
An eventual winner does not erase a regulation draw. Nor can the 18 overtime points be silently added to the fourth-quarter row. The second-half pair shows a less obvious error: the label and line are identical, but using the wrong competition category changes the grade.
If a relevant live-quarter ticket explicitly includes overtime, the scoring boundary changes. In this ledger, fourth-quarter scoring plus overtime would total 41 + 18 = 59. Against 45.5, that is above the line. This is a conditional calculation, not permission to reinterpret a ticket whose rule excludes those points.
After grading, calculate the account credit separately. At an invented decimal price of 1.80, a winning £10 ordinary cash single returns £18 gross, including the original stake, for £8 profit. A losing £10 single returns zero and loses £10. The period decides which case applies; it does not change the accepted price. Fees, taxes, promotions, cash out and payout caps are excluded from this calculation.
Ask for the scoring boundary when a grade looks wrong
An overtime disagreement needs more than a final-score screenshot. Keep the following evidence together:
- The accepted market and selection names, including regulation-only, quarter, half or overtime wording.
- The competition, product, acceptance time, line, price and cash or promotional stake type.
- The quarter scores, regulation total and overtime scoring from the result source specified by the operator.
- The applicable rules version, account entry and any later correction.
Ask which period total the operator used and which clause includes or excludes overtime. If the answer refers to second half, ask which competition category it applied. If it refers to a quarter, distinguish the quarter's own score from any extra-period scoring attached by the betting terms.
An interrupted game needs its own completion and abandonment review. A tie at regulation is not, on its own, evidence that the whole ticket should be void. The broader sportsbook settlement process explains how accepted terms, the specified result and the account entry fit together. The statistics and corrections guide addresses a different problem: which data version the rules recognise.
These pages were reviewed for their current wording, not reported as rule changes announced today. This article does not decide an individual complaint or establish that an operator accepts customers in your location. Understanding settlement does not remove the risk of losing the stake; responsible-gambling information is available separately.
Frequently asked questions
Does basketball overtime always count for a second-half bet?
No. The Betfair Sportsbook pages reviewed here include it for US Basketball second-half markets and exclude it for Euro/Other second-half markets. Confirm the competition category and any specific terms on the accepted ticket before choosing the score.
Is overtime automatically part of the fourth quarter?
Do not assume that for betting. Betfair excludes it from quarter markets, while bet365's British rules explicitly include it under the in-play quarter heading. The operator's market definition controls the betting calculation; the match's final total cannot identify that definition for you.
Why did my regulation bet lose when the team won in overtime?
A regulation-only market stops at its stated boundary. In the invented 90-90 example, a three-way regulation draw wins even though A subsequently wins 102-96. A team selection on that regulation result has not become a full-game winner bet merely because more basketball was played.
