A corrected player statistic does not automatically reopen a settled bet. The answer depends on the named market, its specified data source and the rule governing which version or time of that data counts. Preserve the original settlement and the later correction before asking the operator to explain the difference.

This guide examines English-language football rules from Sky Bet, Betfair Sportsbook and bet365, alongside Opta's own documentation, checked on 27 October 2026. It is for readers investigating a ticket and teams answering settlement queries. We have not placed bets, inspected private feeds or tested an operator's correction process. The examples are editorial illustrations, not real fixtures or decisions on a customer's entitlement.

First establish what changed

A score, an individual action, a player total and the amount credited to an account are different records. A change in one does not identify an error in the others. Start by naming the disputed field: a player's shots on target, an assist, an index ranking or the match result itself.

Opta's explanation of its collection process describes live monitoring followed by post-match analysis and validation. That work can identify missed, misclassified or incorrectly coded events. A later value can therefore reflect a revised event classification rather than a second attempt occurring after the match. This explains why versions matter; it does not supply a bookmaker's settlement deadline.

Save the source and the time you observed each value. A screenshot taken after a correction records the later display, not necessarily what the operator received earlier. If the provider does not expose a revision history, say that the earlier source version remains unconfirmed. Do not substitute the timestamp of your screenshot for the time of the underlying amendment.

The wider process belongs in our sportsbook settlement guide. Here the narrower question is how a particular statistical input and its version connect to the accepted ticket.

Match the statistic to its definition

Two screens can disagree without measuring the same thing. Total shots and shots on target are not interchangeable, and a ball touching the goal frame does not by itself establish a shot on target.

Under the Opta event definitions, shots on target include goals, attempts saved by the goalkeeper and qualifying last-line defensive blocks preventing the ball from entering the goal. An attempt hitting the frame is off target unless it subsequently enters the net. A goalkeeper touching the ball is therefore not a sufficient description of the action: the intended attempt and its classification still matter.

Imagine a fictional player initially shown with two shots on target. A later record shows one after an attempt is reclassified. This invented count says nothing about the correct grade until the ticket's threshold, period, data source and correction terms are known. It also does not establish that either display was Opta's, that the operator received both versions or that any real provider made that correction.

Keep a clip or event reference if it helps identify the disputed action, but ask which definition was applied. An argument based only on how the attempt looked on television can miss the market's actual measurement.

Read three different operator approaches separately

Sky Bet's Football - Match Stat Markets page says the listed markets use data received from Opta at the point of settlement. It includes player-stat markets and separately describes player shots-on-target variants. For an enquiry about that wording, ask the operator to identify the relevant settlement point and the data it received then. A later public total alone cannot reconstruct that earlier input.

The bet365 settlement help page takes a different form. It says Opta can correct statistics after a match and that its trading team reviews Opta reversals or amendments. That statement does not promise that every revision produces a new payout, give a fixed review duration or identify a universal deadline. Request the decision for the actual ticket rather than converting a review policy into an automatic result.

Betfair Sportsbook's football rules use official Opta data for player shots-on-target markets. A separate clause for its Opta Player of the Match market identifies the highest-ranked player under the Opta Points index and disregards player-points updates after midnight local time on the scheduled date. That is a named market's boundary, not a midnight rule for all player statistics or all bookmakers. Keep the wording and obtain clarification of the relevant local date and zone if those are unclear on the ticket.

These are product-specific snapshots. Use the account's applicable rules and any market-specific conditions, not whichever example appears most favourable. A provider, brand or website language shared by two products does not prove their terms are identical. This guide does not cover every market variant, territory or exception elsewhere in those rulebooks.

Build a version record, not just a final screenshot

For the fictional shots-on-target enquiry, retain the accepted market wording and the line selected, then place the original grade next to the later statistic. The useful question is whether the relevant rule makes that changed input material to this ticket. A revised number on the same side of the accepted threshold may not change the selection's outcome at all.

Record these items together:

  • The accepted ticket identifier, product, player, fixture, statistic, threshold and betting period.
  • The original settlement entry and its recorded time, including any later account adjustment.
  • The earlier and later source values, URLs and observation times; mark missing revision history as unknown.
  • The applicable rule version and the operator's explanation of its data source and cutoff.
  • The support reference and written decision, including whether a data correction or a separate processing error was found.

A useful request is: "Please identify the statistic and version used for this ticket, the settlement time and the rule determining whether the later amendment changes its grade." Send it through the operator's secure support channel. Redact personal information from material shared publicly.

Opta's definitions page directs customer queries about a client's service to that client and describes a process for reviewing queries from its business clients. Do not assume a direct message to a data provider replaces a complaint to the bookmaker. Our sports-data and odds-feed comparison explains the different roles; a data supplier and the business holding the ticket are separate points in the enquiry.

Keep a data amendment separate from VAR and a ledger error

A live VAR review can change the recognised match incident while play is still under way. A later statistical reclassification raises a different version-and-rule question. Our VAR resettlement article examines that live incident timeline. Its example should not be imported as a general correction window for player-stat bets.

There is also a third possibility: the operator used the right statistic but posted the wrong grade or amount. Ask for a reconciliation of the ticket and account entry before attributing every change to the provider. A corrected public total cannot explain an unrelated duplicated credit or a selection mapped to the wrong player.

If the explanation remains disputed, preserve the written decision and use the complaint process applicable to the account. For Great Britain, the Gambling Commission's complaints guide says to complain first to the gambling business; the Commission does not decide individual gambling-transaction complaints. Other jurisdictions require their own route. This article does not adjudicate a ticket or promise recovery.

Frequently asked questions

Does a later Opta total always replace the original settlement?

No automatic conclusion follows. Establish the accepted market, the version used and the applicable correction provision. The examples here distinguish data received at settlement, a review of amendments and a boundary applying to one specific index market. They are not three ways of expressing one industry-wide rule.

Is midnight the cutoff for every player-stat bet?

No. The midnight example concerns Betfair Sportsbook's stated Opta Player of the Match clause. It should not be applied to another market merely because that market also uses Opta. Ask for the relevant date and time-zone interpretation rather than treating the reader's device clock as the rule's clock.

What if I only have the statistic displayed today?

Keep it with its URL and observation time, then request the earlier input and the operator's settlement explanation. State what your evidence cannot show. A current page can support an enquiry about a discrepancy, but it cannot by itself prove the content or arrival time of a historical feed message.
