American football betting does not use one final score for every market. A match-winner selection may include overtime, while a fourth-quarter or half-time/full-time selection stops earlier. An NFL regular-season game can also finish tied after overtime, bringing a separate match-betting refund rule into play.
This guide checks English-language Betfair Sportsbook rules, Sportsbet Australia's NFL help and the official 2026 NFL rulebook on 3 November 2026. The teams, scores, stakes and prices below are invented. They illustrate normally completed NFL games, not college football, Canadian football or an actual customer claim. No account, wager or payment was tested.
Keep the regulation result after the game continues
The 2026 NFL rulebook, Rule 4-1-1, defines four fifteen-minute periods and refers a tied game to Rule 16. Regulation and overtime are separate stages. The sporting rule permits further play; the accepted betting market decides whether those later points qualify.
Consider a fictional game in which A leads 14-7 at half-time and 17-14 after three quarters. B scores six points in the fourth quarter, while A scores three. Regulation ends 20-20. Overtime follows and the official completed-game score is 23-20 to A. Assume normal completion, with no later score amendment or exceptional settlement adjustment.
| Stage | Points added in that stage, A-B | Running game score, A-B |
|---|---|---|
| First half | 14-7 | 14-7 |
| Third quarter | 3-7 | 17-14 |
| Fourth quarter | 3-6 | 20-20 |
| Overtime | 3-0 | 23-20 |
The final game total is 43, but regulation contains 40 points. The fourth quarter contains nine and B wins that period 6-3. A wins the first half and the completed game, yet does not lead when regulation finishes. Keep all four observations; none can replace the others.
A period result uses that period's scoring, not the running score displayed when it ends. Reading the fourth-quarter result as 20-20 would mistake the cumulative game score for the quarter's own 3-6. Adding the later three points would instead change the period being measured.
A match winner and a double result use different boundaries
Betfair's Sportsbook rulebook, Part C, American Football, includes overtime in ordinary match betting, match handicaps and match totals. It excludes it from the fourth quarter and from Double Result, its half-time/full-time market. Match betting refunds stakes if the game remains tied after overtime. These are named product rules, not Exchange terms.
Under those boundaries, an A match-winner selection and an A/A double result ask different questions. The first needs A to win the covered game. The second needs A to lead at both specified checkpoints. In this example, A/Draw is the matching half-time/full-time pair: A leads 14-7, then regulation finishes 20-20.
That distinction survives A's later win. The second part of Double Result does not silently become an overtime-inclusive winner because both descriptions contain a reference to the end of the game. Preserve the complete market name alongside the selection, rather than shortening both records to A to win.
The Sportsbet Australia NFL explanation also expressly excludes overtime from the fourth quarter. Its paragraph on periods separately makes an exception for second-half markets. A fourth-quarter label therefore should not be treated as interchangeable with a second-half label.
Second-half handicaps and totals need particular care. Betfair's general period paragraph includes overtime for second-half markets, but its separate handicap and total-points paragraphs exclude it for half-specific markets. This guide leaves those second-half selections ungraded. Preserve the exact subtype and terms, and request clarification where the applicable clauses conflict.
Trace each cash single to its own account entry
Apply the first game's ledger to the separate hypothetical selections below. Each is an independent £8 ordinary cash single at an invented decimal price of 2.25. The repeated price isolates the arithmetic; it does not suggest these selections are available at equal odds. They are not combined legs or a recommended set of purchases.
| Separate fictional selection | Eligible result under the stated boundary | Grade | Gross credit | Net after £8 stake |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A, match winner including overtime | A wins 23-20 | Win | £18 | +£10 |
| A/A, half-time/full-time excluding overtime | A leads at half-time; regulation is drawn | Loss | £0 | -£8 |
| A/Draw, half-time/full-time excluding overtime | A leads 14-7; regulation ends 20-20 | Win | £18 | +£10 |
| B, fourth-quarter winner excluding overtime | B wins the quarter 6-3 | Win | £18 | +£10 |
| Over 9.5, fourth-quarter points excluding overtime | 3 + 6 = 9 | Loss | £0 | -£8 |
| Over 42.5, match total including overtime | 23 + 20 = 43 | Win | £18 | +£10 |
The first two rows can belong to the same sporting result without being inconsistent. A wins the completed game, but its lead at half-time was followed by a regulation draw. Paying the A/A record as a win would use the later score at the wrong checkpoint.
For the fourth-quarter total, nine falls below 9.5. Combining that quarter with overtime produces twelve, but twelve is not eligible for this row. Conversely, stopping the match total at regulation would use 40 instead of 43 and produce the wrong comparison against 42.5.
For a winning cash single, £8 × 2.25 gives an £18 credit, including the original stake. Subtracting £8 leaves £10 profit. A loss credits nothing and loses £8. Those figures exclude taxes, commission, promotions, cash out, deductions and payout caps. The accepted price and actual stake must replace these teaching inputs when checking a real account.
Our moneyline and spread guide handles the separate signed-line calculation. The task here comes first: identify which score the selection is allowed to use. A correct multiplication cannot repair a grade based on the wrong period.
A final NFL tie does not refund every market
Rule 16-1-3 of the 2026 NFL rulebook limits regular-season overtime to one ten-minute period. If scores remain level when it ends, the game is tied. The postseason provisions in Rule 16-1-4 instead continue play through further periods where required. Do not apply the regular-season ending to a playoff game or import a college procedure into either example.
Now consider a different fictional, normally completed NFL regular-season game. Regulation ends 20-20 and neither team scores during the permitted overtime. The official final result remains 20-20. This is a completed tie, not an abandoned game or a result still awaiting further play.
Use Betfair Sportsbook's stated match-betting tie refund and its ordinary whole-number total provision. The latter returns stakes at exact equality unless an exact-total price is offered. Assume no such exact-total offer applies. Each alternative is again a separate £8 cash single, with decimal 2.25 used only where a winning return is needed.
| Separate fictional selection in the second game | Reason for grading | Gross credit | Net after £8 stake |
|---|---|---|---|
| A, match winner including overtime | Final tie invokes the named match-betting refund | £8 | £0 |
| Over 39.5, match total including overtime | Forty points exceed 39.5 | £18 | +£10 |
| Under 40.0, ordinary two-way match total | Exactly forty invokes the stated equality refund | £8 | £0 |
The two £8 credits have different explanations: one follows the final tie in match betting; the other follows equality with a total-points line. The winning total has an £18 credit instead. A tied sporting result has not cancelled every condition attached to that fixture.
A level score at the end of the fourth quarter would not yet justify the first refund while eligible overtime remains to be played. Nor does the final tie determine the treatment of a promotion, a multiple or a specially priced draw. Those require their own accepted terms.
Ask for the checkpoint behind the grade
For a settlement enquiry, retain the operator and product, NFL regular season or postseason, complete market label and any overtime qualifier. Keep the selection, line, accepted price, stake type and acceptance time with the applicable rules. Add the half-time, quarter, regulation and final scores needed by that market, then compare the grade and account credit.
A useful question is which checkpoint supplied the result. For Double Result, request both checkpoints. For a fourth-quarter total, request the points scored during that quarter. For a refund, ask whether the reason was the match's final tie, equality with a line or a different cancellation condition.
The wider sportsbook settlement process connects the receipt, specified result and account entry. Our basketball overtime guide covers that sport's different competition and period rules; its conclusions cannot grade an NFL ticket. A later data amendment is another issue, addressed in the statistics-correction guide.
The operator pages reviewed here do not identify a clear effective date for every clause. The review date records the wording inspected, not a new rule announcement or proof of availability in a reader's country. An interrupted game, player prop or special combined market falls outside these worked examples.
These checks explain settlement without predicting a winner or making betting a source of income. Eligible adults should gamble only where lawful and recognise that the full stake can be lost. Our responsible-gambling resources provide further information.
