A baseball action bet can remain valid when the starting pitcher changes. A listed-pitcher condition can instead require one or both named starters to begin the game. Neither condition, on its own, establishes that enough of the match was played to settle its winner, run line or total.

There are two checks: who actually started, and whether the accepted market's completion requirements were met. This guide uses named English-language operator rules reviewed on 1 November 2026. The examples concern hypothetical ordinary cash singles on scheduled nine-inning MLB games, with invented teams, pitchers, prices and results. We did not place a bet, test an account or verify a current offer.

Read the pitcher condition on the accepted ticket

Betfair Sportsbook's baseball rules describe three moneyline options: Action, one specified pitcher and both specified pitchers. Action retains a pitcher-change wager at the accepted odds. The other options depend on the designated starter or starters actually starting; an unmet listed condition produces a refund. Its World Baseball exception must be read separately.

The bet365 MLB Wagers clause says bets are action at the prices taken, with displayed pitchers serving as information. A pitcher's name on a fixture screen therefore does not prove that a ticket carries a listed-pitcher condition. Player-specific markets still need their own participation clauses.

Confirm what was accepted rather than reconstructing the condition from a later fixture display. Save the full market label, selected pitcher option and pitcher identities alongside the price and timestamp. A replacement announced after acceptance can change the display without changing the historical ticket.

A replacement starter changes some tickets, not every ticket

In the first fictional game, Home's advertised starter P is replaced before play by R. Away's named starter Q begins as planned. R starts Home's first fielding inning; P never starts. The game finishes normally with Home winning 6-3. These inputs are an editorial model, not a report of an actual fixture.

The following rows apply the cited Betfair Sportsbook moneyline options separately to a Home selection. Each assumes the exact condition is available and accepted on that hypothetical ticket. The table tests eligibility and the stated result; it does not combine selections or compare their value.

Four separate hypothetical Home moneyline selections using the cited Betfair Sportsbook options. P does not start, Q does; Home wins a normally completed game 6-3. No real fixture or offered market.
Separate Home moneyline ticketRequired starter recordTreatment in this completed 6-3 example
ActionNo listed-starter conditionStands; Home selection wins
Home pitcher P specifiedP must startNo Action; stake refunded
Away pitcher Q specifiedQ must startStands; Home selection wins
Both P and Q specifiedBoth must startNo Action; stake refunded

Specifying Away's pitcher does not mean selecting Away to win. The selection in every row remains Home. It is the starter condition that changes. Likewise, a both-listed requirement is not satisfied merely because Q starts while P does not.

At an invented decimal price of 2.25, a separate £12 winning cash single returns £27 gross: £12 × 2.25. The £15 difference is profit. An entirely refunded £12 single returns £12 and makes no profit. A losing eligible £12 single would return nothing. Fees, commission, tax, promotions, cash out and payout limits are excluded from these figures.

Action is therefore not another word for a win, and No Action is not a consolation payout at the winning price. The moneyline and spread comparison explains the separate result and handicap calculation.

Starting is different from appearing later

BetWright's listed-pitcher clause requires both listed pitchers to start and throw at least one pitch when the bet is offered on that basis. Its page is dated 19 July 2024; we checked its currently available wording on 1 November 2026. That date does not establish that it announced a new rule today.

Betfair Exchange's Listed markets require the named pitchers to start in their teams' first fielding innings. This is an Exchange provision, distinct from the Sportsbook options above. An Exchange account entry also needs its matched-bet and commission treatment; the cash-single arithmetic here cannot establish that amount.

If fictional P later appears in relief, that appearance does not make P the game's starter. Do not substitute a later pitching line for the starting record. A manager replacing a pitcher after that pitcher has genuinely started is a different event from replacing the advertised starter before play.

For a player statistic, read the player clause. Sky Bet's baseball definitions require the named pitcher to start; entering later as a pitching change does not satisfy that condition. A team moneyline's action status cannot be copied onto a pitcher prop. Our player-participation guide covers the wider distinction between eligibility and performance.

A game can qualify for match-result settlement but not an unresolved total

Now set aside the pitcher change and consider a separate fictional game. All relevant starter conditions are met. A scheduled nine-inning regular-season fixture is permanently called after six complete innings with Home leading 3-2. Assume an official Home victory is declared, no resumption is scheduled and no mercy-rule or special promotion applies.

Sky Bet's Match Result clause uses five completed innings, or a Home lead after four and a half, for the stated abandonment case. Its Handicap and Total Runs clauses normally require nine innings, or eight and a half with Home ahead. The total has an exception when the line has already been exceeded. These are the named operator's conditions, not a universal MLB settlement rule.

Separate hypothetical Sky Bet selections: scheduled nine-inning regular-season game called after six complete innings, official Home win 3-2, no resumption or special exception. All stated starter conditions met.
Separate hypothetical Sky Bet marketRecord after six complete inningsGrade under the cited clause
Home, Match ResultHome wins officially, 3-2; stated minimum metWins
Match total over 4.5Five runs already exceed the lineWins under the determined-total exception
Match total under 4.5Same five runs have defeated UnderLoses under that exception
Match total over 7.5Five runs; normal completion threshold unmetVoid
Match total under 7.5Unresolved before termination; threshold unmetVoid
Home -1.5, HandicapRequired nine/eight-and-a-half innings not reachedVoid; do not grade from the one-run lead alone

The low displayed total does not turn the unresolved Under 7.5 into a winner. By contrast, 3 + 2 = 5 has already passed 4.5, which is why the earlier pair has a different treatment. The game-level result, a completed market and an unresolved market are separate records.

Using the same illustrative £12 cash stake and 2.25 price, the resulting credits are £27 for a win, zero for a loss and £12 for a full void. Those are alternative singles. They do not predict returns or describe a multiple containing a void component.

This completion case does not supply a restart deadline for another operator. Suspended games, postseason continuations, shortened scheduled formats and already-determined markets need their specific clauses. The cricket rain guide illustrates a different sport's completion problem; its overs threshold is not a baseball rule.

Keep two evidence trails with the account entry

For a pitcher dispute, retain the accepted pitcher option, the named identities, the actual starting pitchers and when any replacement occurred. For a completion dispute, retain the scheduled format, completed innings, score at interruption, final official status and any continuation decision.

Connect both to the same ticket: product, market, selection, accepted line and price, stake, timestamp, governing rule and final account entry. Ask whether the decision arose from an unmet starter condition, an unmet completion requirement or the selection's actual result. A bare refund amount cannot distinguish those explanations.

Our settlement overview explains how the accepted terms connect to grading and account posting. This article checks published rules and invented calculations; it cannot decide an individual claim or establish an operator's availability in a reader's country.

Reading these conditions does not reduce the financial risk of betting. Gambling can cause harm and is restricted to eligible adults where legal. See the responsible-gambling support information if you need help.

Frequently asked questions

Does action mean a baseball bet wins if the pitcher changes?

No. In the named moneyline example it means the starter change does not invalidate that ticket. The selection still needs its relevant result and completion conditions checked. Our Home 6-3 example assumes a normal completed game; another result could produce a loss.

Does a listed pitcher coming on in relief satisfy a starting condition?

No. Starting and a later relief appearance are different records. Check the precise clause and the team's first fielding inning. A condition requiring the listed pitcher to start is not met solely because that person eventually pitches.

Why can a moneyline win while an Under bet is void?

They can require different amounts of completed play. In the fictional six-inning 3-2 Sky Bet case, Match Result meets its stated condition while the unresolved Under 7.5 does not meet the total's completion threshold. An official winner does not settle every separate market.
